Asger Jorn(1914 – 73) was a Danish painter, sculptor, ceramic artist, and author. He was a founding member of the avant-garde movement COBRA.

This year it is 70 years since the artist association Cobra was founded. The name is composed of the initials of three of the founding artists' hometowns of Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam.

Artistically the group was characterized by an abstract expressive style inspired by children's drawings, Nordic mythology, etc.
The group wanted an experimental renewal of the existing artistic expression and many of the members were based on existing surrealism. Unlike the surrealists, the COBRA artists wanted an abstract form language that could more widely express the unconscious, as the surrealists also wanted.

The largest collection of Asger Jorn's works—including his major work Stalingrad—can be seen in the Museum Jorn, Silkeborg, Denmark.
