Peter Brandes, 1944-, Danish painter, graphic designer and sculptor. After an expressionist start, the autodidact Peter Brandes took in the mid-1960s the concrete geometrically-embellished painting, but returned to the expressive in the 1970s.
Peter Brandes had a prominent place in the new breakthrough of abstract expressionism in the 1980s. He prefers to work with certain basic figures or structures of fundamental importance to European art including the Nordic and Greek gods.
From the late 1980s, the sculpture, glass mosaic and ceramics arrived, the latter in colossal form as in the nearly 5m tall jar of Maja, performed at the World Exhibition in Seville in 1992, then in front of the Design Museum Denmark, and in the Roskildekrukkerne (1999) at Hestetorvet in Roskilde.
Peter Brandes has lived in France since 1972. Since 1985 he has been a member of artist association Grønningen. He has performed a variety of church designs, including seven major glass mosaics to Vejleå Church in Ishøj (1997), bronze doors to the royal port and new interior of St. Andreas' Chapel in Roskilde Cathedral (2010), altarpiece to the Nørremark church in Vejle (2013) and the altarpiece "golden altar" in Nørre Nissum Church (2016) . In 1994 he received the Eckersberg Medal.
